Endless Endurance Solar Unmanned Aircraft Systems

Our power management technology ports to and assists any UAS with a battery - solar-powered or not. But of course, by adding renewable solar power to your UAS, your aircraft can charge in the air and theoretically fly forever. Packet Digital has teamed with the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) in an effort to create an endless endurance drone. By combining our extended endurance technology with solar Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) and high-efficiency solar cells from the DoD, we believe unlimited flight times are a not-too-distant reality.

Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT)

An MPPT converter adjusts load voltage of the solar array to maximize the power extracted. This dynamic process must respond to changes in the environment such as insolation levels and array temperature. Compared to ground-based applications, MPPT for UAS must be fast to compensate for sudden changes in cloud cover or aircraft position that could affect sun angle.

High-efficiency Solar Cells

Our work with the Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) has given us access to the most advanced, flexible photovoltaic (PV) cells for UAS. Stacked semiconductors create multiple p-n junctions with varying bandgaps to absorb more wavelengths and a broader solar spectrum, extracting more power and higher efficiency.
